December 21, 2012: As many throughout history had predicted and even more had dismissed 2012 did, indeed, bring an apocalypse to the Earth. A planetary alignment that only happens every 25,800 years coincided with a peak in solar activity that happens every seven years. The adverse gravity from the alignment affected the solar flares and a number of abnormally large ones, of a size we never imagined, rocketed toward Earth faster than they could really even react. While they knew that there may be a chance of larger-than-normal solar flares, this was simply far outside anything they could have taken seriously. They quickly found out how serious it could be. The accompanying EMPs from the solar flares short circuited any electronic device that was plugged in or contained batteries. But that was only the beginning...
The solar flares also disrupted Earth's atmosphere in a major way. At first there was warming. North America barely even experienced Winter in early 2012. In April and May things should have begun warming for Summer. However the temperatures started dropping. By June the snows that the north had missed in January and February were returning off schedule. Most of the population that hadn't done so already began to migrate south. With no mass communication to speak of it was anyone's guess as to whether it would really be warmer in the south, but no one had any better ideas.
As they traveled small groups began to join together. This allowed them to add more diversity, more skill-sets, and greater numbers to help ward off the marauding raiders who would steal their supplies...or worse.
As this continued the many, many large groups melded into two large ones. The first to reach the warmer regions of Central America had been hardened by the constant attacks of raiders and heathens. By the time they found an area they wanted to settle in their leaders had already established the framework on which they would build their new civilization. They would model their society after the mighty Roman Empire, embracing organization, strong military and political systems, and a focus on arts and sciences. In the interest of securing the region and ensuring their success they were ready to trample and eliminate the savage, the lawless, and the defiant. The would call themselves "The New Empire".
In contrast the other major group, who arrived shortly after the first, adopted an entirely different outlook. They felt that man needed to get closer to the Earth if they were going to survive this and not make the same mistakes. Mankind's dependence on technology and fossil fuels has made this disaster a huge shock. Most people have no idea how to grow food or live off of the land. So their plan was to teach everyone in their group to learn ways to be a part of the community, and that everyone would take care of each other. They were sure this was the keys to mankind's survival. "The New Empire" saw them as backward savages and began to refer to them as "The Horde", a label they chose to embrace out of shear defiance.
However, this left the two communities in direct conflict with each other, and each of them came to believe that elimination of the other was imperative to their own survival and success. And so we find ourselves in mankind's future...a future that bears an uncanny resemblance to our past. Welcome to "The Dark Age".
THE NEW EMPIRE
My name is Steven Ruiz. Well, it was anyway...back in the time that was before the hammer dropped and the world changed; when the solar flares hit the earth and the resulting EMPs knocked us back to the Stone Age by frying most of our electronics and technology.. Sure, some things that weren't hooked up to juice survived, but in general, the new world we were left with was barely recognizable. Shortly after we lost most of our tech the weather began to change due to the massive disruption of the Earth's atmosphere. As an educated man I knew what was happening, and I knew I had to move south to avoid the bitter cold that was coming. I had no way of knowing if this would mean salvation, or if it would only prolong the end, but I would not go gentle into that good night. If death was coming for me, that bitch was going to have to hunt me down and take me.
So I gathered a few friends and associates, and we took what we could and began to head toward the equator. Along the way we encountered many people. Some we found common outlooks with, and they with us. Some we out to harm and rob, but the larger our group became, the less of an issue those people were. Not only that, but the more of them we encountered, the more it strengthened our resolve and caused us to contemplate what sort of society we wanted to established when we reached our destination.
By the time we arrived in what was once known as Guatemala, we not only had a plan, but we had established a hierarchy. We had decided that the Romans had done quite well molding military might, a sound political system, and a love of arts and knowledge, and had melded them into a powerful and successful society. This would be the model for our society. I was elected leader, and in what was really intended to be silly and symbolic, I discarded my "old" name and became "Maximus Caesar". Who would have ever thought it would go this far?
So only months later we formed "The New Empire". We have a mighty army led by able and gifted commanders. We have a mighty colony established in the jungle and...I don't even know how many citizens. Suffice to say we've grown...a lot.
Our biggest hurdle seems to be the survivors who don't seem to have adjusted as well to the changes on this planet of ours. While we have tried hard to create a new civilized society where we can preserve the arts and knowledge of mankind and move forward toward becoming a civilized society once again, others seem to have devolved into savagery. There are numerous tribes of them with the worst being the nearby cannibals. Not native jungle savages as one might think, but obviously people who were once as civilized as the rest of us. They now take part in pagan rituals, human sacrifices, and even the consumption of human flesh. They seem to have taken over the cities. That's fine... there is little left there that we want anyway, but they aren't the only ones. There are also other tribes who, while not as savage, are far from moving in the civilized direction that The New Empire is headed. A month ago we began capturing them when we could. We are keeping them in compounds and working hard to bring them around. In the meantime, we have them help with manual tasks such as construction and clearing more jungle for expansion.
So we are well on our way. We have carved out our own area and established a society that will lead mankind out of this darkness and back to the greatness we once knew.
STEVEN RUIZ COMMANDER PROFILE
Steve "Pretty Lou" Ruiz is paintball veteran of over 15 years He has competed all over the country and is no stranger to the Living Legends game. As captain of The Reservoir Dogs, Pretty Lou led his team to the 2007 TTPL championship and 2 top 3 finishes in the years since. He is a well respected player that has held command positions in games throughout the eastern portion of the United States, from Florida to Massachusetts, New Jersey to Illinois including the legendary Dark Ops Extreme events. Pretty Lou is a leader in every sense of the word and few in the sport today can call themselves his equal in the field, but many certainly can call him a friend. Whether he is helping a newer player with some Valken gear, or teching a regulator for Guerrilla Air tanks, Pretty Lou is always on point and ready to go when the horn sounds. Adding to the spectacle of Living Legends this year will be his own legendary Lemon Chicken. Often imitated, never duplicated, the dish has become almost a right of passing in the east coast paintball world.
THE HORDE
So...all the "crazies" were right. Planetary alignment event plus a peak in our sun's cycle of solar activity equals mankind thrown back to the first century A.D.. Who would have figured? No, not just the loss of technology, but the emergence of a new society that is modeling itself after the Roman Empire. Crazy...seriously crazy.
My name is Thomas Kerstetter, and I am recording this for posterity so that people can look back and, perhaps, learn from my examples...or my mistakes.
Like many people, I headed south after we lost most of our tech to the EMPs caused by the solar flares, and the temperatures started dropping due to the atmospheric reaction to the flares. It was summer, yet we were just ahead of the snows. North America must be in an Ice Age now. As we headed south, we gathered supplies and picked up "strays". After we managed to scavenge some radios, we began scanning frequencies looking for others. We linked up with another strong group which helped us better fend off attacks from roving bands of raiders. By the time we reached warmer climates, we had a pretty large, strong, and diverse group of people.
It's not too bad here in Central America, but "The New Empire" is determined to make it hell. Just like the Romans they idolize they are oppressing anyone who won't join them and/or pay tribute. They take prisoners and use them as slaves as they build and expand. It's as if they have learned nothing from our past. As they embrace the Romans as their model, it seems we ended up being in the same position as those who defied them so many centuries ago. They insist on trying to absorb and convert everyone in their path. They refer to us as "The Horde". In response to their attempts to conquer and enslave us we had no choice but to band together. I was told by someone who escaped from them that they refer to us as a "scourge" so, in defiance, I have discarded my old name and am now known by friend and foe simply as "Scourge".
We would be just fine living as we choose, but "The New Empire" seems bent on enslaving us, forcing us to join them, or trampling us under foot. This will not do. It is up to us to lead mankind back from the brink of extinction. If mankind is going to triumph over this, our most difficult hurdle, we will have to vanquish this violent new society and rid mankind of such savage and oppressive outlooks. The only way back from the brink will be that of respect for personal freedoms and free will...not of oppression. Through battle with these oppressors, we will ensure a peaceful future for mankind. But for now; once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more...
